Sedgefield Golf Association 2020

Hello Sedgefield Members.  Here we are getting ready for the 2020 Golf Season.  The SGA Board has lined up a great new season of regular play and tournament golf for your enjoyment.

We start with the Breakfast Open on April 18, 2020 which combines the SGA with the MGA for a unique outing with breakfast and lunch.  This is just the beginning.  Beyond this we have four other tournaments along with the full year Challenge Cup Championship and the Jim Widler SGA Championship.  The full Calendar can be found under that heading on this site.

Be a part of the festivities.  Get your partners for the Partner/Partner tournament and barbecue. And of course, get your appetite ready for the Annual SGA Awards and Dinner.

Partner/Partner Tournament
July 27, 2019

The SGA held its biggest tournament of the year combined with a BBQ for all players and spouses.  This year the BBQ was held at Joe and Tracy Calder's graciously donated home.  The tournament is a 2 man team playing different formats for the front and back nines.  The front is a modified texas scramble and then playing both balls to the hole for best ball.  The back is also a modified texas scramble and then playing alternate shot to the hole with the chosen ball.  There were 19 teams this year.  The BBQ had 73 people attend.  This year there was also para mutual betting on the 19 teams.  Over $1,300 was bet.  Of the 97 individual bets placed only 17 people were paid fo betting the first four place teams.

Champions:  Keith Vandegrift, Duke Slaughter      -11 (61)

Second Place:   Kerry Stinman, Blake Davis            -9 (63)

Third Place:   Bob Beck, Larry Grogan                    -8 (64)

Fifth Place:   Lance Weeden, Andres Dearmas        -5 (67 card)
SGA Liberty Open
June 29, 2019

The SGA held its annual Yellow Ball Liberty Open on June 29.  The competition requires a 3 ball low net score but one of those scores must be a rotating yellow ball among the four players.  Starting with the lowest handicap player the yellow ball rotates through the foursome with each player hitting the yellow ball on four holes with team choice on holes 17 and 18.  Psychology plays a big part in this tournament.

Champions:  Brad Coppinger, Bob Urbont, Dave Samuels, (b) Joe Mufale                   -12 (204)

Second Place:  Lance Weeden, Keith Vandegrift, Larry Grogan, (b) Duke Slaughter    -11 (205)

SGA Memorial Day Tournament
May 25, 2019

The SGA held its annual Memorial Day tournament on May 25 with 28 participants.  The tournament is a 3 ball low net competition and produced some very low scores for all 7 teams.

Champions:  Brad Coppinger, (B) Harold Clark, Chris Frey, Cliff Carattini            -43 (173)

Second Place:  Jeff Duncan, Harold Clark, Ken Kaelin, Duke Slaughter                 -41 (175)

Third Place:   Mike Understein, Dave Ott, Kerry Stinman, Steve Young                   -41 (175 card)

Fourth Place:  Tom Kubik, Bob Urbont, Chuck Loew, Jamie Sonda                        -40 (176)
SGA/MGA Breakfast Open
April 27, 2019

The SGA and MGA held their Breakfast Open tournament which is meant to insure camaraderie between the older and younger members of the Firethorne Country Club.  There were 44 players for this year's tournament.  The tournament provides both breakfast and a lunch for participants.  This year's winners were as always a combined foursome of SGA and MGA members playing a 4 ball low net.

Champions:  Liebert Danielson, Geoffrey Sanders, Adam Danowski and Joe Calder   +8 (card)

Second Place:  James Taylor, Jeff Young, Chris Mardany, and Duke Slaughter            +8

Third Place :  AC Carpenter, Leif Ebert, Kerry Stinman, Ken Kaelin                             +12

Fourth Place:  Brandon Katsoudas, Terry Stauffer, Verne Rainey, Joe Mufale             +14

Fifth Place:    Andrew Loscher, Brian Monteith, Lance Weeden, Jamie Sonda             +22

Tuesday, October 30, 2018

The SGA held its Annual Championship on October 13 and 14, 2018.  19 Competitors were in the two day field.  The first day saw Glenn Eddy shoot a net score of 69 for a -3 with two others, Mickey Olsen and Paul Myers,  hot on his heels at -1.  The second day saw a complete shift of fortune for  those chasing Glenn.  They became Joe Calder and Herman Heid at -1 and +4 respectively. Glenn held on shooting a net 72 and maintained his -3 for the win.

June and July 2018

We have our upcoming tournament for the July 4th Holiday which will be played on  Saturday June 30.  The Liberty Open is an annual favorite playing YELLOW ball.  For those that have not played the yellow ball must be one of the counted low net balls and rotates through the foursome four times.  The last two holes can be played by anyone in the foursome but must still use the yellow ball.  It is a fun time and is a challenge.

There are also four OMEGA matches to be played in the two months.

JUNE and JULY 2018

Well folks we have passed on April and May 2018 already and have had an awful lot of rain.

Stroke play:   Each player plays his ball all the way to the hole. All strokes are counted. The ball must be “holed out”.  The ball must be played as it lies.  USGA rules apply. Rules of play will be reviewed prior to each round to address course conditions and/or allowances.

Rain-outs:      Rounds will not be made up if there is a “wash out” ... there is no rain date.  The round will count if all players play the same 9 holes. Prize payouts may be adjusted depending on the circumstances. The awards dinner on Friday night will be held regardless.

Event “Local Rules”:

  • Leaf Rule – a ball that is lost in-bounds in a leaf covered area may be played in the leaf area where the ball was observed to land and come to rest with no penalty. The ball must be dropped.

  • “Hard pan” or “Root Rule” – with the agreement of an opponent, a ball that comes to rest on a “hard pan” area where rocks/stones/roots are near enough to the ball that a club would hit the rocks while striking the ball, may be placed without penalty within two club lengths from the spot of the original ball location, on a line from the pin to the original ball location, no closer to the hole. (Note: The objective of this rule is to avoid hitting an unsafe shot and to prevent damage to the golf club.)  However, the root rule does not apply to a ball resting against a tree (possibly unplayable rules apply).
  • Ties - For 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each of the individual rounds, ties will be resolved by card comparison of the last 9 holes, then last 6, then last 3, then last hole.  Ties for 1st place for the overall two days will be resolved by “sudden death” play-off on holes as determined by James at the time of 2nd round completion.   Allocated prize money for overall 2nd and 3rd place ties will be shared.
