2018 Challenge Cup Rules
The Challenge Cup qualification period runs from April 1 through
August 31, weather permitting on normal Wednesday and Saturday SGA play
days. There are no entrance fees and $1,525 will be paid out to
the 16 players who make it to the playoffs in September as follows:
1st - $400 2nd - $200 3rd -
$125 4th – $100 each
5th – 8th $75 each and
9th – 16th $50 each
Points:
Points earned on Wednesday and Saturday are combined, so the more
you play SGA the better your chance to qualify for the September
playoffs.
Points are awarded
throughout the Challenge Cup period to the players on Wednesday and Saturday,
respectively, as follows:
Each player that plays the full round on either Wednesday or Saturday will receive 0.5 points for participation. There will be a maximum of 11 points awarded each day of play. There are approximately 40 playing days. (EXCLUDES all Saturday MGA and SGA-sponsored Tournaments).
Low
Net scores - 5 places awarded:
1st = 6 points
2nd = 4 points
3rd = 2 point
4th= 1
point (ties for this place each receive 1 point)
Low Gross score = 2 points
NOTE: See Rules below
for winning both Low Gross and a Low Net in the same round.
In the event there
are less than 9 players, the points will be as follows:
Low Net scores - 4 places
awarded:
1st = 3 points
2nd = 2 points
3rd = 1 point (ties for this place will
each receive 1 point)
Low Gross score = 2 points
In the
event there are five or less players on any given Wednesday or Saturday,
there
will be no pointes awarded for play that day.
Rules:
- A player must have played at least
five 18-hole rounds with SGA on Wednesday or Saturday during the last 12
months to be eligible to win points.
- Since for
both Wednesday and Saturday there is an individual Low Net-based game for
points or payout, each hole must be played out and the actual score
recorded - no maximum. Scores for the round must be
submitted for handicap purposes and may need to be adjusted for
individual hole scores according to the Equitable Stroke Control rules.
- If
a player wins or places second for Low Net and wins Low
Gross also in the round, he will only receive the Low NET points
since they are higher. In this case, there will be no Low Gross Points
awarded.
Playoff
Rules
- The players with the 16 highest
points at the end of the Challenge Cup qualification period will qualify
to play in the Challenge Cup Playoff. If multiple players tie
for the 16th seed, they will have an 18 hole playoff with
no maximum strokes per hole and the lowest net score deemed the
winner.
- The first round of playoffs is the
second or third Saturday in September depending on the calendar. However,
players who may not be able to play on that Saturday may play their
first-round match on any date prior to that Saturday date.
- If a qualifying top-16 player
cannot play in Round 1 of the Playoffs (by the Saturday scheduled), the
next highest qualifying player will be moved up to complete the field of
16. No "byes" are provided for Round 1 and no money will
be awarded for qualifying players who do not play in the Round 1.
- Round Two will always be played
the Sunday immediately following the completion of Saturday Round 1.
Players who cannot play in Round Two after qualifying through winning in
Round 1 will be replaced by the player who lost in Round 1 with the lowest
Net Score.
- Because of the limited available
weekends in September, the Challenge Cup will be played over three weekend
days in September: Saturday and Sunday of the second or third weekend and
then the final on the next full SGA regular Saturday play date in
September.
- Each player's regular handicap
will be used to calculate respective handicaps, with the proper adjustment
made for playing tees. Sedgefield tees are the norm.
- If your handicap is based on playing
70% of your rounds from the Gold Tees, you may play the Gold Tees with the
proper stroke adjustment.
- No maximum strokes per hole and
all putts must be holed.
- Rounds 1 and 2 will be single
elimination Low Net score and seeded based on year-to-date points -
#1 plays #16, #2 plays #15, etc. In the event of a tie on
year-to-date points, the seeding will be based on the most winning points
versus participation points. The winning points gaining the higher seed.
- Final Round – The remaining 4
players play in the Final Round and will play against each other with the
player with the lowest net score winning the Challenge Cup, with second,
third and fourth places following based on net scores.
- All ties at the end of 18 holes
will be decided based on a card playoff based on last 9, then 6, then 3
holes.
- In
the event of weather issues, the Board will determine, with the aid of the
Pro Shop, as to when the particular round(s) may be played. In the event
of weather issues, the SGA Board will determine all rules and resolve all
issues,
